Wavenumber Spectra of Wind Waves in the Range of l - 50 m

چکیده

A new method of analysing wave directional data is applied to wave staff data from Lake Ontario during 106 episodes covering a range of wind speeds (up to 16 m/s) and significant heights (up to 2.5m). The method yields wavenumber spectra directly and examples are shown of downwind slices through the full 2-D wavenumber spectrum. These spectra are steeper than the conventional view would suggest, tending asymptotically to k" at high wavenumbers with respect to the peak. On the other hand, the spectral peaks of the individual runs follow a steepness limited k" pattern.

Investigation of vertical wavenumber and frequency spectra of gravity-wave-induced vertical wind and temperature perturbations

233 hours of high-precision vertical wind and temperature measurements in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) were used to study the spectra of gravity wave perturbations in the mesopause region. The temperature spectra are generally consistent with the theoretical predictions of gravity wave theory. The averaged slope of the frequency (f) spectra is –1.83±0.08, while the slope of the v...

Quantification of the contribution of equatorial Kelvin waves to the QBO wind reversal in the stratosphere

[1] Both global scale waves (e.g., Kelvin, equatorial Rossby, or Rossby-gravity waves) and mesoscale gravity waves contribute to the wind reversals of the quasi biennial oscillation (QBO). The relative contributions of the different wave types are highly uncertain. In our work we quantify the contribution of equatorial Kelvin waves to the reversal from stratospheric easterlies to westerlies ave...

The Effect of Breaking Waves on a Coupled Model of Wind and Ocean Surface Waves. Part I: Mature Seas

This is the first of a two-part investigation of a coupled wind and wave model that includes the enhanced form drag of breaking waves. In Part I here the model is developed and applied to mature seas. Part II explores the solutions in a wide range of wind and wave conditions, including growing seas. Breaking and nonbreaking waves induce air-side fluxes of momentum and energy above the air–sea i...

We present a theory predicting the high-frequency-high-wavenumber part of the spectral energy density of internal waves in the ocean. The theory is based on the wave turbulence formalism applied to a natural Hamiltonian description for the internal wave field. We show that stationary energy spectra form a family of statistically steady state scale invariant solutions. Remarkably, the high-frequ...

Capillary-gravity and capillary waves generated in a wind wave tank: observations and theories

Short water surface waves generated by wind in a water tunnel have been measured by an optical technique that provides a synoptic picture of the water surface gradient over an area of water surface (Zhang & Cox 1994). These images of the surface gradient can be integrated to recover the shape of the water surface and find the two-dimensional wavenumber spectrum. Waveforms and two-dimensional st...
